Why I’m Passionate About You

For far too long, women have upheld the Church in funding, growing, and discipling its members, yet we still face major disparities in position, power, and pay when it comes to Church leadership and economic wellness.

Throughout the canon of scripture, we see countless examples of women as leaders, teachers, and financiers of the Gospel. Jesus’ very ministry was funded by women “with means” – and it happened to be these same women who were at the tomb, when the resurrected Christ appeared to them saying, “Go spread the Good News!” – firstly crowning women with this treasured charge.

American Women have higher rates of church attendance, prayer, and participation in religious services than men, yet are less visible in Church leadership roles. (Source: Pew Research)

While American Congregations are about 61% female, yet only 11% are led by women. (Source: National Congregations Study)

Of the 9 major religions in the U.S. that both ordain women and allow them to hold top leadership slots, only four have had a woman in the top leadership position, and each of them only once. (Source: Pew Research)

The lay leadership of Roman Catholic Church parishes is now significantly larger than the priesthood, and it is chiefly run by women. (Source: State of Clergy Women)

In Black Baptist churches, women represent 50-75% of church membership, but less than 10% of church leadership and perhaps 1% of pastors. (Source: Courtney Lyons)

Can we all agree that in the 21st century, there’s no reason we should still be having this conversation.

When women have equal and equitable access to position, power, and pay within ministry opportunities and among church leadership, the greater community thrives – and everybody wins! (Especially the Kingdom of God.)
